A magnitude-4.0 earthquake was recorded Tuesday morning underneath Mauna Loa’s summit caldera.

The temblor was located at a depth of 0.7 miles and occurred at 4:25 a.m.

No damage is expected.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said magnitude-4 or greater earthquakes occurred near the Mauna Loa summit six to seven months before the 1975 and 1984 eruptions.

But HVO noted this quake “does not represent a significant departure from the seismic activity rate for the past year.”

Mauna Loa’s volcano alert level remains at an advisory.
